Route Steward program

Keep one route trustworthy.

Route Stewards help ABS keep knowledge current without pretending that any route can be permanently verified.

The role

A knowledgeable point person—not a trail warden.

A Route Steward is a volunteer contributor who has an ongoing relationship with a route and helps ABS maintain its planning record.

Watch for changeShare meaningful changes through riding, local knowledge or responsible public sources.
Strengthen the recordHelp verify water, camping, services, access, surfaces, route geometry and seasonal considerations.
Keep evidence clearDistinguish personal observations from rider reports and source research.
Represent the route, not control itStewards do not own ABS route pages, enforce access, guarantee conditions or unilaterally change policy.
Public attribution

With permission, a route page may identify a Route Steward and the date of the most recent field check. Stewardship does not make someone a legal member, Director or officer of ABS.

Cadence

A steward is not expected to patrol a route. For many routes, one meaningful field check per season or year plus timely reporting is enough.

Term

The role is voluntary and can be ended by either the steward or ABS. A route can also have co-stewards.

Express interest

This is not an appointment; it starts a conversation.

What would you like to help with?

Role expectations: Route Stewards report what they know, document uncertainty, respect access and other users, and work through the ABS route record. They are not expected to patrol, provide emergency response, guarantee rider safety or resolve access disputes personally.
